"That man...really does care for you," my brother said from the driver's seat of his car.

"Yeah," I replied with a nod.

"That's good," he responded, letting out a small sigh.

"I couldn't help but be concerned about what kind of person you were staying with. I never imagined there was some stranger out there who would take someone else's child in with pure intentions. I was always worried that you'd ended up living with someone horrible and found yourself in danger."

It hurt a little to hear him say that. True to my brother's concerns, I had, in fact, stayed with a number of those 'horrible' people before coming here.

Although I knew that he was truly worried about me, I used up all of the money that my brother had generously lent me on repeated hotel stays. He told me to come home if I was short on cash, but I flouted this advice and decided to cut off all contact with him. That was when I ran away. As a result of that decision, I ended up sleeping with a man for the first time in my life, and in doing so, lost almost all sense of decency.

Since he'd gone as far as to thoroughly investigate where Mr. Yoshida was living, I figured my brother may have also looked into the path I'd taken before I ended up there. I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye, but his gaze remained fixed on the steering wheel in front of him, and he didn't look like he wanted to discuss anything.

Whether or not my brother knew what I'd been through before ending up at Mr. Yoshida's...there was no way I could admit it to him now.

With neither of us speaking, we spent a few moments sitting in the car in silence, until...

"...Mom's been calling me almost every day lately. She won't stop asking whether I've found you yet. It's every single day..."

"...I see."

"As you say, it's not because she's necessarily worried—at least, I don't think so. It's just—"

"I know, I know... She gets hysterical."

My words brought a bitter expression to my brother's face, and he silently nodded his head.

"Ever since 'it' happened, she's become really unstable. And since you left home...it's only gotten worse."

It was painful to hear him allude to that incident, and the fact that my mother had become more unstable since my departure was excruciating to hear, too.

I knew that wasn't because she'd been particularly worried about me. And yet, I wasn't cold-hearted enough to be indifferent to the news that my family was a mess.

That said, if someone were to have asked me whether I could have stayed in that house, my answer would have been a definitive 'absolutely not.'

In truth, I still couldn't imagine going back. All of those memories still weighed heavy on my heart, and I wasn't mentally strong enough to carry on living there without anyone around who could help me.

If only I could have had someone like Mr. Yoshida by my side.
